Winter 2018 Newsletter

MOLO FROM DAWN
Greetings from the beautiful Wild Coast in Winter!  The aloes are blooming, the ocean is alive with fish, dolphins, whales and birds and the Ncinci One's are blossoming!

It has been another busy term for us.  I attended the South African Montessori Association (SAMA) National conference in Port Elizabeth at the end of April.  It was a wonderful weekend filled with Montessori!  The keynote speaker, Amukta Mahapatra, gave very inspirational talks and shared the amazing work she has done in education in India - incredible woman!

I also attended the 6th Inspiration Awards breakfast, which was held on 17 May 2018 at the Mercedes Benz Visitors Centre.  There were almost 500 people in attendance at the event.  The 4 finalists (including Sustainable Coffee Bay) all had really great stories to share and many tears of joy were shed. I am really happy that Enkazimlweni Ncedenani Life Centre won the Award for 2018 - she has been doing incredible work for a long time!  Ncinci One's Montessori was gifted a R5000 award and 4 days global business training fromMBSA.

LATEST HAPPENINGS

Ncinci One's Montessori is very happy to say that we now have our NPO number :-)
Our 2 Assistant teachers, Nosandise and Luyolokazi are busy with theirMontessori training during these holidays.
We have not started our After-school programme yet, as we are first building a covered eating area for the Ncinci One's.  This additional space will also be used by the After-school programme children.
This blessing has come to Ncinci One's Montessori through a terribly sad happening.  A good Norwegian friend,Yann Reistad, spent 8 happy months with us in Coffee Bay in 2006. In February 2018, Yann gave Ncinci One's Montessori a donation and then started a fundraiser for us, which would end on his 46th birthday, 17 April 2018.  Yann, who was a generous, fun-loving guy, decided to take his own life on his birthday :-(  His parents, Helge and Colette, who I had met in 2006 when they visited Coffee Bay, decided to carry on Yann's last living wish, and help Ncinci One's Montessori.  They set up the Yann Eric Reistad Memorial Fund and friends and family could donate to this fund, in memory of Yann and in aid of Ncinc One's Motessori.  Yann's Memorial Fund donated an incredible R70 000 to our project, which will allow us to build the covered eating area and operate the After-school programme for 40 children, for 8 months! Building of the Yann Eric Eating Area will start in July 2018.  A very
SPECIAL thank you to the Reistad family and all of Yann's friends for this incredible financial assistance.

MONTESSORI MOMENT
At school, there is a lacing frame that the children use to learn how to properly lace their shoes.  Asiphe, 4 years old, was having trouble with her takkie's laces.  Lindokuhle, 6 years old, saw Asiphe was having a challenge, so asked Asiphe to remove her takkie.  Lindokuhle then proceeded to show Asiphe how to remove the lace and how to start from the beginning.  It is lovely when these kind of opportunities present themselves, for the children to utilize and demonstrate their knowledge and independence :-)
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are still looking for just 8 Sponsors!  For only R500 per month, you will be providing a young rural child with the following:

A solid Montessori foundation; A beautiful, stimulating and nurturing educational environment; 2 nutritious meals and a daily calcium supplement; Regular health checks  and de-worming twice a year.  You receive:  Good karma for helping a rural child get the best start to life! We will update you with a quarterly newsletter and you can request an update and photo's of Your child that You sponsor, at any time.  Please consider arranging sponsorship of a Ncinci One's child through your school, group of colleagues, or friends.

We would really like to introduce the amazing Maths Buddy at our After-school programme, so we are looking for 5 Tablets to start. If anyone has a tablet that they are not using or has access to cheaper tablets, please do let us know.  Maths Buddy is a really great programme and it has been doing excellent things for the children atXora Mouth school, where the Bulungula Incubator operates.

We urge you to walk this road with us!
“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”  Nelson Mandela

FROM THE NCINCI ONE'S
We were very happy when we returned to school and saw that we had a nice new reading corner with a book shelf and soft beanbags.  It is a lovely sunny reading area and we use it often.

We all had our 3-day de-worming recently, so are good for the next 6 months.  Unfortunately we had a round of mumps in our village this term, which made us all be absent for a few days.  There is no medicine to cure mumps, but we have a Xhosa fix, which we will share with you in the Something Xhosa section.

We have 3 lovely kittens at school, who really need loving homes.  If anyone from the greater area would like a fluffy friend, please come see us.

We are going back to another surprise in the 3rd term, a new expanded Culture learning area - thank you very much tokidsRfuture and EMIT for giving us more learning materials :-)

THANKS AND APPRECIATION
Ncinci One's Montessori has been blessed again this term.  The kindness and support of many people keep our project going and growing.   For this last quarter, we would like to thank the following people and organisations for their amazing support. Without you, our Early Childhood Development Centre would not be sustainable and we would not be able to offer these young, rural children the great opportunity they are getting. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You All Very Much for your support!

SOMETHING XHOSA
As we said, we had a mumps outbreak in the village and most of the children were affected by it.  I asked a local doctor, Eybe, what is used to cure mumps and he told me there is nothing.  The local Xhosa people have a remedy of their own for curing mumps and it is used by adults and children alike.
The inflicted person goes into the forest and finds a Umsenge tree (False Cabbage tree).  He/she talks to the tree and tells the mumps to leave the body and go into the tree.  After doing this for a while, the person turns around and leaves the forest quickly, without looking back.  2 days later and the mumps swelling is down.
